Condition
Neck Lines
The neck is often neglected in skincare and rarely protected from the sun, so it can look older than the face. Treatment planning depends on whether the concern is horizontal creasing, skin quality, or vertical muscle bands.
What is Neck Lines?
Neck skin is thin, with fewer oil glands and less structural support than facial skin. Horizontal lines reflect creasing and collagen loss, crepiness reflects reduced elastin and hydration, and vertical bands are the visible edges of the platysma muscle becoming more prominent with age.
Common signs and concerns
- Horizontal rings across the front of the neck
- Crepey, finely lined texture
- Vertical bands appearing when you tense or speak
- Sun damage, freckling or redness on the front of the neck
- A less clear transition between jaw and neck
Possible contributing factors
- Sun exposure with sunscreen usually applied only to the face
- Age-related collagen and elastin loss
- Posture and prolonged screen or phone use
- Weight change
- Smoking
- Genetic skin thickness and elasticity
When to seek professional assessment
Any lump, swelling, persistent hoarseness or difficulty swallowing in the neck is a medical matter and should be assessed by your GP before aesthetic treatment is considered.
How Dr Farzana assesses this concern
Assessment is anatomical rather than product-led. Dr Farzana looks at facial proportion, skin quality, volume distribution and movement, then discusses what is contributing to the appearance you have noticed. Options are explained with their limits, alternatives and recovery, and nothing is treated on the day unless you are comfortable and suitable.
Treatments that may be considered
These are options offered by Dr Farzana that may be discussed for this concern. Which, if any, is appropriate for you is decided only after a private medical assessment.
Suitability and important information
This page is general information only and is not medical advice or a diagnosis. Suitability for any treatment is confirmed at a private medical consultation, including a review of your history, medication and goals. Risks, alternatives, aftercare and realistic outcomes are discussed openly. Results vary between individuals and no treatment is suitable for everyone.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the neck age faster than the face?+
Neck skin is thin, has fewer oil glands and less structural support, and sunscreen is often applied only to the face. Together that means the neck can look older than the face itself.
What are the vertical bands on my neck?+
Those are the visible edges of the platysma muscle, which become more prominent with age and are most noticeable when you tense or speak. They are managed differently from horizontal creasing.
Is the neck treated differently from the face?+
Yes. Settings, depths and product choices are more conservative here because neck skin is thinner and heals differently, which is one reason treatment should be doctor-led.
Can deep neck lines be improved?+
Long-standing creases usually soften, and texture and tone often improve noticeably. Complete removal of an established crease is not realistic, so the goal is set clearly with you before starting.
How many sessions are usually involved?+
The neck is normally treated as a staged course with review points, rather than in a single appointment. The interval is decided at consultation based on your skin.
Does posture or phone use matter?+
Prolonged flexed posture contributes to horizontal creasing over time, so it is worth addressing alongside any in-clinic treatment for a lasting result.
When should a neck symptom be seen by a GP?+
Any lump, swelling, persistent hoarseness or difficulty swallowing is a medical matter and should be assessed by your GP before aesthetic treatment is considered.
