Condition
Aged Hands
Hands are exposed to sunlight almost every day and are often the first area to look older than the face. Patients usually describe two separate things: loss of padding, and changes in the skin surface itself.
What is Aged Hands?
Hand ageing combines a reduction in the thin fat layer on the back of the hand, thinning of the skin, and accumulated sun damage. As padding reduces, tendons and veins become more visible; as collagen and elastin reduce, the skin becomes crepey and pigmentation becomes more obvious.
Common signs and concerns
- Veins and tendons standing out more than before
- Thin, crepey skin that stays pinched briefly when lifted
- Brown sun spots or uneven pigmentation on the back of the hand
- Slower recovery after minor knocks and bruising
- Prominent knuckles with a hollow appearance between them
Possible contributing factors
- Cumulative ultraviolet exposure, including driving and gardening
- Age-related collagen, elastin and fat loss
- Weight loss
- Smoking
- Frequent hand washing, gels and detergents
- Skin type and family history
When to seek professional assessment
Aesthetic treatment of the hands is elective, but any pigmented patch that is changing, growing, itching or bleeding should be examined by a doctor before it is treated cosmetically. Persistent stiffness, joint swelling or pain needs a medical rather than aesthetic assessment.
How Dr Farzana assesses this concern
Assessment is anatomical rather than product-led. Dr Farzana looks at facial proportion, skin quality, volume distribution and movement, then discusses what is contributing to the appearance you have noticed. Options are explained with their limits, alternatives and recovery, and nothing is treated on the day unless you are comfortable and suitable.
Treatments that may be considered
These are options offered by Dr Farzana that may be discussed for this concern. Which, if any, is appropriate for you is decided only after a private medical assessment.
Suitability and important information
This page is general information only and is not medical advice or a diagnosis. Suitability for any treatment is confirmed at a private medical consultation, including a review of your history, medication and goals. Risks, alternatives, aftercare and realistic outcomes are discussed openly. Results vary between individuals and no treatment is suitable for everyone.
Frequently asked questions
Why do hands often look older than the face?+
The backs of the hands are exposed to sunlight almost daily and are rarely protected. Combined with a naturally thin fat layer and thin skin, that makes tendons, veins and pigmentation more visible with age.
What concerns can be addressed?+
Patients usually describe two separate things: loss of padding on the back of the hand, and changes in the skin surface such as crepiness and brown sun spots. These are assessed and planned separately.
Is treating the hands more uncomfortable than the face?+
The hands are sensitive, so comfort measures are discussed and used where appropriate. Most patients find treatment very manageable, and everything is explained fully before you consent.
How long do results last?+
Longevity varies by option and by individual, and continued sun exposure shortens it. Daily sun protection on the hands is part of every plan, and maintenance intervals are agreed at review.
Can pigmentation on the hands be improved?+
Sun spots often respond well once they have been confirmed as benign. Any pigmented patch that is changing, growing, itching or bleeding is examined medically before it is treated cosmetically.
How does Dr Farzana assess hand ageing?+
Assessment is anatomical: she looks at skin thickness and quality, the degree of volume loss, tendon and vein visibility and the pattern of sun damage, then explains which options suit your hands and which would add little.
When should hands be reviewed medically instead?+
Persistent joint pain, stiffness or swelling needs a medical rather than aesthetic assessment, as does any suspicious pigmented or non-healing lesion.
