What is Lichen Sclerosus?
Lichen sclerosus is considered an autoimmune condition wherein immune system dysregulation causes chronic lymphocytic inflammation in the upper dermis. This leads to collagen swelling, elastosis, and epidermal thinning, giving the skin a porcelain-white, crinkled 'cigarette-paper' appearance. Over time, chronic inflammation can cause architectural resorption—such as shrinking of the labia minora or burying of the clitoral hood—and painful micro-fissuring.
